Controlling a character in MVC2 involves six buttons and the directional controls. There are four
attack buttons: light punch, hard punch, light kick and hard kick. The other two buttons are Assist 1 and
Assist 2. The directional controls has 8 possible directions: up, up forward, forward, down forward, down,
down back, back, and up back. By combining the buttons with the directional controls the player will gain
a basic control of the character. You should experiment with these very basic controls before attempting
anything more advanced.
Go to “training mode”, pick Ryu, and 2 other characters. Training mode will allow you to learn the
basic control without having to worry about an opponent attacking you. The basic controls only allow
characters to do basic attacks, makes sense, right? To perform specials and supers, you will have to learn
how to do directional motions. The 2 most common motions in this fighting game are quarter circle forward
and quarter circle back, or qcf/qcb for short. The qcf is pictured above.
Pictured above is Ryu’s move list. To perform a “hadouken”, aka a fireball, first select Ryu and then go to
“Training Mode”. Then simply move the controller from down, down forward, to forward and press light/heavy
punch when you get to the forward. If you have never done this before, expect to spend some time with little
success. Once you can produce 10 consecutive fireballs then you are ready to move on. The qcb+k is also a
very common command. It makes Ryu perform a “Tatsumaki Senpuu Kyaku” or hurricane kick. You should also practice
this until you can produce 10 consecutive hurricane kicks.
Once you have mastered those special attacks, you are ready to perform “hyper combos” or “supers”.
Most commands for supers are identical to the command for the corresponding special, except for one difference
– supers always involve 2 punches or 2 kicks. So to do Ryu’s fireball super, simply perform the fireball command
but add one punch – qcf + pp. To do his hurricane kick super, just input qcb + kk. Take some time to master both supers.
Pictured below is Ryu’s Shinkuu Hadouken.
Now start messing around with other characters. You will find that the majority of characters have specials
and supers that are produced by the qcf +p and the qcf + pp commands. Once you have mastered these attacks then
you will be ready to go the section.
